It’s 19 November, International Men’s Day. But don’t forget that “You can speak up as a man, as long as it’s to apologise” (Inside-Man’s critique of current gender politics).
Indeed, the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland refused to show a video for today’s events because…I’m not sure. The video mentions several issues facing men today without criticizing women or feminism.
I guess I do know why. Even mentioning men’s issues is taboo. As they say in the video, society’s response is “here’s a big straw, suck it up”.
Men are shamed for not opening up about their feelings, and then are shamed when they do open up. But there’s less shame in being strong and silent, so that’s what most men do.
