For those who don’t know, Stephan Hawking was recently asked what humankind’s greatest shortcoming was. He said, “The human failing I would most like to correct is aggression. It may have had survival advantage in caveman days, to get more food, territory or partner with whom to reproduce, but now it threatens to destroy us all.”
I admit, it probably seems somewhat arrogant to run around disagreeing with theoretical physicists all the time. Oh well, in for a penny, in for a pound.
I disagree with Hawking, in fact, I found his statement rather disturbing. It’s practically a cliché, it’s a simplistic idea, a popular thought. More empathy, less aggression, and then we can all hold hands, sing kumbaya, and not annihilate ourselves.
There’s a deception in there that I find unpleasant, that does not embrace the nature of ourselves, that does not honor the human design, the biological truth…
